Affordable Game Changing Beauty Tools

It is often said that fingers are your own best tools when applying makeup. When applying concealer, possibly. However when it comes to heavier coverage bases and powder products, hell no. It’s messy, stressful and overall not the most pleasant experience. I always find myself scrambling for a wet wipe and in the process of doing so, smearing foundation all over various products. I have scarring memories of my fifteen-year-old self slapping on the infamous Dream Matte Mousse with my hands and I’m certain they will echo throughout my brain for the rest of my makeup loving history.

When I came to discover beauty blogs and the realisation that the Dream Matte Mousse life was not the one (thank God), I started to research makeup brushes. It was a daunting experience to say the least. Intimidating ventures to the MAC counter were made. Staring at the prices and coming home empty handed became the regular. Between the ages of 15 to 17 are a blur because I dread to think of what I was using to apply my foundation. However, it’s all part of the learning process. Here are my current favourite beauty tools that receive a lot of love and have lent a helping hand in improving my makeup skills.

Real Techniques really were the biggest game changer in terms of affordable makeup tools and for that I will be forever grateful. My four favourites are:

– Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge enables complete seamless blending. I am still keen to try the original beauty blender but for now this will satisfy my craving.

– Real Techniques Buffing Brush and Contour Brush from the Core Collection Kit

– Real Techniques Bold Metals 301 Flat Contour brush. Creme de la creme of the ‘budget’ brushes.

Moving onto other brands, the KIKO Eyes 200 Rounded Eye Brush is a staple in my collection as it is a complete MAC 217 dupe. I picked this up last summer in Italy and it washes beautifully.

The Royal & Langnickel Silk Pro Angled Brush wedges neatly into your lash line and can create the thinest of brush strokes to achieve those lusted-after faux brow hairs.

For a natural contour and sweeping on blusher I love the Elite Models Blusher Brush and can be used for various powder products. I often see this brand being stocked in TK Maxx’s beauty emporium of dreams, or more commonly known as TK Maxx’s beauty section. I swear you can find all sorts of makeup treasures in there.

The cutest tweezers ever. I picked these up in Tiger however I can’t find these online but check your local store. Basically a Tweezerman dupe, they grab the tiniest of stubborn eyebrow hairs.

Okay so I know I said affordable but sometimes you do get what you pay for and there is no hiding the fact that sometimes higher end products really are worth the splurge. My two more expensive holy grail beauty tools are:

The Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers. These babies are lethal. They will keep a curl all day, providing fanned out, poppin’ lashes. Pair with a waterproof mascara and you’ll never have to worry about drooping, straight eyelashes again.

The MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush. Basically it packs eyeshadows on like there’s no tomorrow and if you want your shadows to adhere to your lids with that extra punch of pigment, spritz your brush with some Fix Plus or makeup setting spray before hand.

So that’s a round up of my top ten game changing makeup tools. What are yours?
